Traveling with your furry friend? Here's everything you need to know about dog-friendly trails, restaurants, lodging, and activities in Canon City.

Exploring Canon City with Your Dog

Good news for dog lovers: Canon City is surprisingly pet-friendly! Many of our favorite trails, parks, and even some businesses welcome well-behaved dogs. Here's how to make the most of your visit with your four-legged companion.

Dog-Friendly Trails

Tunnel Drive Trail - This riverside path is perfect for dogs. The gentle grade and paved surface make it accessible for all fitness levels. Dogs must be on leash but can enjoy the sights and sounds of the Arkansas River. Bring water for both of you—it can get warm!

Temple Canyon Park - This city park allows leashed dogs on its trails. The variety of terrain gives your pup plenty to sniff and explore. There's a creek for cooling off on hot days.

Red Canyon Park - Dogs are welcome on leash here too. The dramatic red rock formations provide a beautiful backdrop for photos with your pup.

Pet-Friendly Lodging

Several accommodations in Canon City welcome dogs. Many vacation rentals are pet-friendly—check listings on VRBO or Airbnb and filter for pet-friendly options. Some hotels also accept dogs with a pet fee, including several chain properties along Highway 50.

Important Notes

The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park does NOT allow pets (except service animals). Plan accordingly—don't leave your dog in a hot car. The same applies to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

Pet-Friendly Patios

Several restaurants in Canon City allow dogs on their outdoor patios, especially during summer. White Water Bar & Grill's deck is dog-friendly. Always call ahead to confirm current policies.

Tips for Visiting with Dogs

  • Bring plenty of water—the high desert climate can be dehydrating
  • Watch for wildlife—your dog might want to chase bighorn sheep or deer
  • Summer pavement gets hot—walk during cooler parts of the day
  • Always clean up after your pet to keep trails open for future visitors
